Skateboarding Made Simple · Chapter 22 of 23
A nosegrind means grinding on just your front truck. It takes balance and confidence, and it looks smooth when it is locked in.
In This Chapter
- Choosing your ledge
- The approach
- Locking onto the front truck
- Riding away
Gear Check
Board, sturdy trucks, wax, and a solid 50-50 grind.
Step by Step
- Pick a low, waxed ledge you can already 50-50.
- Approach at a slight angle, just like a 50-50.
- Ollie a little higher than usual.
- Land your front truck on the edge with your weight over your front foot.
- Keep your back truck up and balance like a nose manual.
- At the end, press down slightly on the tail or pop off the end and ride away.
Tip
Practice nose manuals on flat ground first. A nosegrind is basically a nose manual on a ledge.
Remember
Keep your shoulders forward. If you lean back, your back truck drops.
Warning
Getting hung up on the nose can pitch you forward. Start on a low ledge and be ready to step off.
Common Mistakes (and How to Fix Them)
- Back truck drops. Shift more weight onto your front foot.
- Front truck misses the ledge. Ollie a little higher and keep your eyes on the ledge.
- Stopping short. Come in with a little more speed.
Skate Nerd Stuff
A crooked grind, or crook, is a nosegrind with the board angled so the edge of the nose touches the ledge too.
Your Practice Plan
- Nose manuals on flat ground.
- Short nosegrinds on a low curb.
- Grind the full length of the ledge.
