Skateboarding Made Simple · Chapter 23 of 23
A 5-0 is a grind on just your back truck, like holding a manual on a ledge. It is a great step toward technical ledge tricks.
In This Chapter
- Choosing your ledge
- The approach
- Balancing on the back truck
- Getting off
Gear Check
Board, sturdy trucks, wax, and a solid 50-50 and manual.
Step by Step
- Pick a low, waxed ledge.
- Approach almost parallel at a slight angle.
- Ollie up and land your back truck on the edge.
- Keep your weight over your back foot and the nose up, like a manual.
- Balance with your arms as you grind.
- At the end, set the nose down or ollie off.
Tip
If you can hold a manual on flat ground, you can learn a 5-0.
Remember
Keep the tail just above the ledge. If it drags, you will stop.
Warning
Leaning too far back can shoot the board out. Start slow on a low ledge.
Common Mistakes (and How to Fix Them)
- Tail drags. Ease up on your back foot.
- Front truck drops. Keep more weight on your back foot.
- Sliding off the side. Approach at a gentler angle.
Skate Nerd Stuff
A 5-0 is the back-truck version of a nosegrind. Put them together and you are ready for 5-0 to nosegrind combos.
Your Practice Plan
- Manuals on flat ground.
- Short 5-0s on a curb.
- Grind the full length of the ledge.
