Chapter 21: How to 360 Flip

Skateboarding Made Simple · Chapter 21 of 23

Difficulty: ●●●●● AdvancedTime to learn: 2 to 6 months

The 360 flip, also called a tre flip, is a 360 shove-it combined with a kickflip. It is one of the most loved tricks in skateboarding, and it takes real patience.

In This Chapter

  • Back foot scoop
  • Front foot flick
  • Spin vs. flip balance
  • Catching it

Gear Check

Board, durable skate shoes, a solid kickflip and a 360 shove-it.

Step by Step

  1. Back foot. In the toe-side pocket of the tail, toes slightly over the edge.
  2. Front foot. Just behind the front bolts, a little closer to the middle, angled.
  3. Scoop. Pop and scoop the tail hard behind you to spin the board a full 360.
  4. Flick. Give a small flick off the heel side with your front foot as the board rises.
  5. Jump high. Pull your knees up so the board has room to spin and flip.
  6. Catch. Catch it as it finishes spinning and land over the bolts.

Tip

Your back foot does most of the work. Big scoop, small flick.

Remember

Learn the 360 shove-it first. If the board can spin a full 360 under you, you are halfway there.

Warning

This trick can take weeks or months. Take breaks so you do not get frustrated or roll an ankle.

Common Mistakes (and How to Fix Them)

  • Board only spins 180. Scoop harder with your back foot.
  • Board flips too much. Use a lighter flick with your front foot.
  • Board shoots forward. Jump straight up and keep your shoulders square.

Skate Nerd Stuff

It is called a tre flip because of the "three" in three-sixty.

Your Practice Plan

  1. Learn 360 shove-its.
  2. Tre flips standing still on grass.
  3. Tre flips rolling slowly.
  4. Work on catching them consistently.
