Skateboarding Made Simple · Chapter 2 of 18
Every skater rides either regular (left foot forward) or goofy (right foot forward). Neither is better. Figuring out which one feels natural is the very first step.
In This Chapter
- Regular vs. goofy
- Three quick tests to find your stance
- Where to put your feet
Gear Check
Your board and flat shoes.
Step by Step
- The push test. Stand with your feet together and have a friend give you a gentle push from behind. The foot you step forward with to catch yourself is usually your front foot.
- The slide test. Take a running start and slide on a smooth floor in socks. The foot that leads is your front foot.
- The stairs test. Notice which foot you step up with first. That is often your front foot.
- Set your feet. Front foot just behind the front bolts, angled slightly forward. Back foot across the tail. Knees soft.
Tip
If the tests disagree, try riding both ways. Whichever feels less awkward after ten minutes is your stance.
Remember
Left foot forward = regular. Right foot forward = goofy. Riding with your other foot forward is called switch.
Warning
Do not lock your knees. Stiff legs are the number one reason beginners fall.
Common Mistakes (and How to Fix Them)
- Feet too far apart. Keep your feet about shoulder width.
- Standing on the very nose. Front foot goes near the front bolts, not on the nose.
- Looking at your feet. Look where you are going. Your feet will follow.
Skate Nerd Stuff
Riding backwards in your normal stance is called fakie. Riding with your opposite foot forward is switch. You will see both terms in later chapters.
Your Practice Plan
- Try all three tests.
- Stand on your board on grass and shift your weight around.
- Practice stepping on and off with your front foot first.
