Skateboarding Made Simple · Chapter 16 of 18
Dropping in is how you start a run on a ramp or bowl. It is mostly mental. Once you commit, your body knows what to do.
In This Chapter
- Setting the tail on the coping
- The lean forward
- Riding away
Gear Check
Board, helmet, knee pads and a small ramp to start.
Step by Step
- Set your tail on the coping with your back foot on the tail, holding the board in place.
- Place your front foot over the front bolts.
- Lean your whole body forward, putting weight on your front foot.
- Push the front wheels down onto the ramp.
- Keep your knees bent and ride away.
Tip
Commit fully. Leaning back halfway is how you fall. Lean forward like you are going down the ramp with the board.
Remember
Start on the smallest ramp you can find.
Warning
Leaning back is the number one drop-in fall. If you are nervous, have a friend hold your hand the first few times.
Common Mistakes (and How to Fix Them)
- Leaning back. Lean forward and commit.
- Front foot too far back. Put it right over the front bolts.
- Stiff legs. Bend your knees.
Skate Nerd Stuff
The same lean-forward motion is used for every ramp transition.
Your Practice Plan
- Practice the lean on flat ground.
- Drop in on a small ramp with help.
- Drop in on your own.
