Skateboarding Made Simple · Chapter 12 of 18
In a pop shove-it, the board spins 180 degrees under your feet while you jump straight up. Your body does not turn, just the board.
In This Chapter
- The scoop
- Jumping straight up
- Catching the board
Gear Check
Board, flat shoes, a working ollie helps.
Step by Step
- Back foot on the tail with toes hanging off the heel edge slightly. Front foot near the front bolts.
- Crouch down.
- Pop the tail while scooping it backward behind you with your back foot.
- Jump straight up and let the board spin beneath you.
- Catch the board with your feet and land over the bolts.
Tip
Think about scooping the tail behind you, not kicking it sideways.
Remember
Your body stays facing the same way. Only the board turns.
Warning
If the board spins but you land off to the side, you are jumping forward. Jump straight up.
Common Mistakes (and How to Fix Them)
- Board under-rotates. Scoop harder behind you.
- Landing primo (on the board edge). Your front foot needs to stay ready to catch.
- Jumping forward. Jump straight up.
Skate Nerd Stuff
A regular shove-it has no pop. The board just slides around on the ground. Learn that first if pop shove-its feel hard.
Your Practice Plan
- Learn a regular shove-it standing still.
- Add pop.
- Try it rolling slowly.
